I have a Saab 93 1.8t convertible which I have just bought. Saab have offered an engine management system upgrade by Hirsch which costs around £650 and boosts the car from 150bhp to 175bhp. Anyone had this done? What does it do to the fuel economy and performance?

Welcome!
Our 1.8t saloon has the Hirsch upgrade. Probably the best value upgrade in the range. The power, however, does not go to 175 hp. it goes to 195 hp! Never regretted it for a second. No noticeable effect on fuel consumption, but lots on performance. No reliability issues. Much smoother drive too.
If you can afford it, do it!
Insurance went up 10%.

I had a 150BHP diesel that had been Hirsched to 175BHP before I bought it, and I loved it, certainly made the diesel engine a better beast to drive (not as good as a petrol engine though).
You have the added advantage that Hirsch offer a 10 dauy free trial too, whereby the dealer can flash the software to your car for 10 days free fun motoring, if you like it, you pay the £650, if you don't like it you ask them to remove the software and pay nothing. See hirsch-performance website for more info.
I just wish I had the spare cash to get it done myself.

Got mine done today and also the springs.
Performance
Compared to a Tunit unit the power delivery is much smoother and not so "in your face".
Indeed with the auto box kickdown feels more natural.
Very very happy
Springs
The lowered look now complements the 18" wheels - can just get one finger under the outside rear wheelarch and two at the front.
The ride and handling differences are amazingly good. Gone are the harsh shocks felt over uneven surfaces and the perceived hopping feeling when taking sharp bends.
On the motorway the drive felt more relaxing and firm braking feels more controlled.
One thing bothers me though - The Hirsch website is quite specific that I need part #F750003800 for the TTiD convertible Auto
http://www.hirsch-performance.ch/Content.a...erke/F750003800
The box they put my old springs in said part #F750003100 Pro-Kit Saab 9.3 (YS3F)
http://www.hirsch-performance.ch/Content.a...erke/F750003100
This states for TTiD Sports Sedan Auto.................
Will check with dealer tomorrow.

If you drive it the same way before and after you won't see any difference in fuel consumption, IIRC the Hirsch website even shows an improvement over official figures.
My 9-5 2.3t had the treatment 18000 miles back and I don't regret a single penny spent.

hi
i bought a 9-3 Aero on a 54 plate, i am frankly astonised at that the hirsch upgrade, the power is delivered extremely smoothly and the fuel ecconomy is excellent for a car of this perfomance.
i regularly get 45ish on a run at motorway speeds, even got 49 if you drive at 65!
i wont definately reccomend the upgrade, it is a refined car as comapred to my 205GT Laguna

Come on, Calvin - have you done it yet?

I love my 1.9TiD wagon with the deer on the back. Much better than the standard 150 bhp.
I can't speak for their petrol upgrades, but the price compares favourably with the Maptun exchange ecus I had on my 9000's 10 years ago.
All I can say is "suck it and see" - if they'll give you your money back you have nothing to lose.
Let us know when you've had it done!
