When the SID says 30 miles till the tank will be empty
then it means the tank will be empty in 30 miles
if it is 31 to home then you may as well phone your brother-in-law before you set off and ask him to meet you a mile from home with the full petrol can

not that I'd do such a thing - oh no, not me!

anyway, how come Clarkson had another 150+ miles in the tank after driving from Switzerland to Blackpool in a diesel Jag when his computer was on zero even before he hit the M55

Probably stopping every few miles to siphon fuel from the camera crew car.

My old 9-5 ran out with DTE on 15 miles! A week or two before it ran for two miles on 0!!

The current SID says "Refill Fuel Now" when the DTE gets to 20.

My Daughter and her Husband were driving home on a French motorway and pulled in for fuel with DTE at 30 miles. A storm had tripped all the pumps and they were waiting for someone to come and re-set them, next fuel 60km. She says they decided if they had enough diesel for 30 miles at 90mph they could do 60km if they slowed down so changed display to temp and thought happy thoughts as they continued at 50mph to the next services.
