    Hi I have 9-3 yr 2000. 2.0T

Today the Brake and ABS light came on is there a common reason this happens. I.e. do the brake pads need changing or are there different reasons this could come on?

    Could be many things.

Did the light just flash on or is it on all the time?

Yes it came on this morning then didnt drive it for a few hours. Just drove it and the light went off. I have ben getting a bit of a noise when I brake every now and then dont know if this is why.

The ABS and speedometer take readings from the wheel sensors. If the data is disrupted you will get the warning lights.

If you have noise, check the front sensors for contamination or a cracked tooth ring on the back of the driveshaft joint. The speedo only uses the rear sensors. So, if the speedo is OK, I would concentrate on the front end.

I took off the sensors and gave them a clean but the light still comes on now and then are the sensors on the way out or could it be something else?

It's not difficult to check whether or not the pads need changing. Noise is normally caused by insufficient material on the brake pads, rust on the edge of the disc or debris between the disc and mud guard.
