Thread: Steering vibration

  1. #1
Whoops, put this in the 93SS topics first by mistake (sorry!). I've got quite a lot of steering column vibration at motorway speeds (70-90). It's a 2000 model year 93 hatch. I'd put it down to wheel balancing, but that's supposed to have been fixed and the vibration remains. Should I give the wheel balancing another go, or is anyone aware of another common cause? Cheers.

    Hi,
Could be you have a buckled alloy? I took mine into Kwikfit to be balanced and they told me that most of my wheels were buckled (ebay junk!) He refitted them in the best positions to minimise vibration. I've been very impressed by the 3 Kwikfits I've been to in the past couple of years (no, I don't work for them!)

At least yours don't shake at any legal speed

    Nick.

    Thanks Nick,

Good suggestion: I suspect I do have a slightly buckled alloy, as I'm losing tyre pressure on one wheel. I'm after a new set of alloys, as the new ones are a bit steep on a motor with 146,000 on the clock!

I had this problem with a 98 9-3 2.0 Turbo. Two wheels buckled beyond repair. Ended up buying a complete set of after market alloys.

Thanks SN5, looks like a common problem. Just got a new set from a 2003 cabrio from an advert on this site, so I'll let you know if that cures the problem (fitted tomorrow!).

Now fixed: new wheels courtesy of this site (thanks Stuart!) have sorted it out. Running peachy!
