Thread: 9-3 convertible hood not retracing fully on both sides

  1. #1
Hi - my convertible hood is going all the way back but as soon as it gets to the point that the back flap wants to close over the stored roof, the hood has not retracted completely into the hood space on the driver's side. The back flap cannot go all the way down. The passenger side seems to have gone back in enough. The error is 'check soft top'. Apart from that it's working fine but obviously it's not drivable (not that we have the weather for a convertible this year).

Is this a common problem with a quick fix for hubby (who does know what he's doing mechanically and electrically, just not necessarily on a Saab hood) or is it a garage job?

Would appreciate any info on likely prognosis!

    Thanks.

In case anyone has the same problem - it turned out to be the hydraulic pump on one side being nearly empty.

Of course as soon as I got to the garage the roof worked perfectly! But instinct told me to get it checked anyway.

That was the right decision. It was caught before it had drained fully so it was just the cost of a couple of hours labour and top up fluid. I was told that had it drained fully it would have damaged the pump which would cost a couple of thousand to replace & fit.

If you ever get this problem, even if it's intermittent - get it checked ASAP.

    Hi all,

I am a new user, signed on today and not sure how to post a query yet.

However, having followed several threads perhaps someone can assist.

I have a newly acquired 2004 9-3 convertible. The left hand roof struts (rams) are leaking and I have been quoted £400 each (2) plus a couple of hundred pounds labour costs to replace them.

Can anyone help - strut refurbisher, supplier of re-furbished struts??
