Thread: 96 9000 cse issue

  1. #1
Good afternoon, new to the forums.

I recently acquired a 96 Saab 9000 cse turbo. It had some minor issues due to a deer encounter. Replaced some sheet metal, radiator support, oil cooler and had car painted. Oil levels looked good, coolant levels fine, car ran fairly well with a slight vibration at idle and gas pedal requires some effort but both smooth out once going. Put about 600 miles on with no issues. Quiet. Recently it started to knock and does so with acceleration and does not fade much at all. Am I looking at the obvious? Is this common?

Also I had put a new Saab check valve (white one) as the old one was broke. Which direction should the valve work.

    Thanks for any help

    Jeremy

    Welcome to Saabscene

Firstly, the easy one. The check valve is meant to prevent boost pressure in the inlet manifold pressurising the crankcase, so should be installed with the arrow indicating flow from the rocker cover to the inlet manifold.

Is the knocking frequency related to road or engine speed? Does it depend on whether the clutch is engaged?

Thanks on the vent and Thanks for the Welcome. I should mention this is an automatic. Knocking is relative to engine RPM
Similar to rattling lifter's, but not exactly. I haven't tried to isolate the noise as of yet. The vehicle has 142k and was a good runner when damaged.

Added note, this does sound like lifters (probably single) and is most harsh at idle and moderate to hard accelleration, once up to cruising speed it seems to dissipate somewhat. No check engine light and it would appear to have good oil pressure.
Does the oil pump usually go out or is it a gradual thing with these. Pick-up tube?? (I am a parts manager at a Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and GMC dealership and admit I am not familiar with Saab)

    Thanks again!
