Thread: Starter Motor Replacement

  1. #1
    Morning from a Newbie!

Can this be done by an enthusiastic amateur (have previsouy changed starter motors on
Escorts and Fiesta) or is it a 'dealer' job?

Battery checked by ATS and is A1 OK - Turning ignition key produces a single loud click under the bonnet but nothing else.

Assume its the starter motor unless anyone can suggest alternatives?

Finally is there a 'Haynes' manual for the 9-5 (2001) or better still a Workshop manual on CD?

    Cheers
    Scott

Hello and welcome to the forum Scott .

Yes, there is a Haynes manual (looking at it right now - covers 9-5 MY97-04 4-cyl petrol). I'm sure there is a Workshop manual on CD too. I also have the Saab EPC parts guide which can be very useful sometimes. Got it from eBay.

Regarding the starter. According to the Haynes manual it should be fairly simple. The starter sits at the back-left of the engine. Not done it myself, but Haynes steps are as follows:

Disconnect battery. Apply handbrake and jack up front of car.

From inside engine compartment remove the starter upper mounting bolt.

Unscrew nut(s) and disconnect the wiring terminals from the starter solenoid (could be this that's causing your trouble). Cut and release the cable-tie from around the solenoid to release the wiring loom.

From underneath, unscrew the lower starter mounting nut and then lower the motor away.

As you may have guessed, Haynes states that refitting is the reverse of removal, making sure everything's tight .

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for that!

Any way to tell if it's the starter or the solenoid?

Not sure how to best test which is causing trouble (or if it's possible to change just one on the 9-5). I'm sure if you wait a little longer someone will be able to suggest something. Alternatively, you could try giving an auto electrician near you a call.

If you are going to all the trouble of removing the Starter, put on either a new one, or even a reconditioned unit. You don't want to find that you need to do the job twice. It's false economy of time.
