increase mpg?

finally hit 21mpg today YIPPEEEEE! without driving everywhere at 30mph and a good 'ol service is there anything else that may increase it? going by figures other people have i seem to be a few miles lower than most. im hoping to replace the ecu which should make a difference. is there anything else i can do without spending hundreds?

You could try a new air filter, maybe a fuel filter and check tyres are at the correct pressures to name three things.

Let your wife/Gf drive. That way you will know if it's the car or you.

I can never get more than 35Mpg from MY97, My wife on the other hand, 42+

Doing the usual service stuff always helps. If I've been naughty and not done the usual 6000mile or 6month service items I always find the MPG figure drops towards the end of a year. The drops haven't been as significant since using the Millers oils product, but it's still differs by about 2mpg.

I've just ordered 12 BCPR8ES plugs and some more of the good old millers juice.

The filter will be out tomorrow night, washed and left to dry before a coat of the replenishing K&N oil is applied in the morning.

Dodgy Lamda sensor seems to be a common cause of poor mpg

I had poor fuel consumption. New lambdas brought it back to "normal". Could have been the result of mild contamination from the Tesco silicone incident last year?

What do you all call "good", "poor" etc? any numbers? Just tryin to work out what I need to be aiming for!

(Adding to the possible causes of high fuel comsumption) Make sure the wheel alignment is up to spec. as well as correct pressure in the tyres. Also make sure your handbrake is not sticking.

I can get almost down to 7-7.5 liters per 100km if I drive calmly on a calm country road cruising at 70 km/h. On the other hand if I drive the same car in agressive downtown traffic it can consume more than 20 liters. So it depends on driving style and conditions more than anything else.

no, i mean 21! its the highest ive had yet, i wouldnt mind if it was 31. read in the handbook that urban is 20.8 and mixed closer to 30 so maybe isnt far off.

Around town, school runs etc, I get 21 to 26 depending on lots of different factors. On a steady run of more then 20miles, she gives 29 to 35, on a long run, with my wife driving, she will give 42+
That's on a M97 2.0 lpt with a M95 FPT ECU. and one or two other mods. I do have a heavy right foot.
You are reading from the dash read out in imp, and NOT US? What's your Air Filter like? also, press and hole the 'R' button down for 30 or so of your earth seconds, to reset the readings. you should do this every 1500 miles or so, I do every time I fill, or part fill the tank.

Based on dash readout.
Currently 29mpg around town on my 2.3fpt.
37mpg at motorway speeds
43+ if tootling at 50mph.

But don't belive what you see...........
Did an experiment once (sad I know) and got 540miles from one full tank at 50mph on the motorway. The readout said 46mpg, but if you work it out, one tankful (14.5gallons) the maths say 37mpg :-(

Send me a message to paul.anderson@kerrybioscience.com and I will send you a copy of my consumption spreadsheet. Over the 6 months to 31 Dec. I averaged 27.3 with a max of 30.3 and min of 20.5 ( towing ). These are 'real' figures, brim to brim and are about 2 mpg less than the computer calculation. '97 Aero 151k.

What I keep meaning to do is repeat the loop between the roundabouts at J10 and J11 on the M9, at different constant speeds resetting the computer after each loop. This should give a reasonable idea of the best practical consumption at different speeds. Any less is down to road conditions and right foot weight.

I took my lambda out over the weekend, gave it a good dosing with the blowlamp until glowing. Put it back in and reset my MPG counter, went up from 22.4 to 28.5 over the next 50 miles on the same roads as before with the same driving. Time for a new one I reckon!
