After ordering a new key from Saab (why have I ever only had one key given to me on buying a S/H Saab?) I used a trip to the mainland to have it programmed. Unfortunately, although I tried it in the door and it worked OK, I did not think to try it in the ignition and guess what? It did not fit! Wasted visit to Saab dealer, who said that it needed a new ignition barrel and another visit would be necessary. Looking on Ebay I found this:

HOW TO PROGRAM YOUR KEY FOB REMOTE KEY (SAAB) Item number: 180199301608 for 99p

Is it really that easy and has anyone tried it?

Reason I ask, is that it took me about two hours to take out the ignition barrel, Strip it down and get it to work with both keys. However, it still needs to be programmed. The problem with the key appears to have been that Saab (GM!) made the new key slightly smaller - I checked it in a couple of places with a micrometer. Probably within their tolerances, but added to the wear on the brass internal parts (they must have a name, but I cannot find one, so will call them "cams") GM stood to make a 100 out of it.

I took out all the cams and put them back one at a time checking with both keys. Some worked better swapping them over. I left one out and two others I filed down very slightly.

Anyone else with a mind to do this or just in order to clean the barrel properly should get paper and pencil and sit comfortably with good light. There are 10 No. "cams" and each is numbered Y2, Y3, S6 etc. and very tiny springs. Make sure that you take them out one at a time and note where each one goes, so that you can always put them back as they were.

Don't bother you need a dealer or specialist locksmith to programme your key.

As for coding locks to keys I've done plenty in my time it used to be common place when replacing accident damaged external locks in the days when locks used to be seperate parts from the door handle and were easily damaged in most door scrapes, Gm are not the hardest to do when you've done a few...if you want easy buy a Ford you can read the keys just by looking at one, give me a Ford key and I'll tell you the key no: in about 15 seconds.

When buying on Ebay, you can only really go on the feedback and this seller has about 840 positive. Unfortunately, these are for other vehicles and not Saabs. It seems to work OK on Rovers. Don't mind risking the 99p, but would not want to end up messing up both keys and needing to replace the whole key/alarm system!

For your 99 pence they will send you a letter advising you to take it to your local dealer to be programmed.

At last. Someone almost as cynical as me! As I said, you have to go on the feedback and you are not going to get people who have been ripped off and with 50 + feedback ratings, saying "many thanks" "great service" etc.
