Can't Get Into Reverse! Please HELP!

    Greetings All!

Just wanted to say how Great this website is and I'm so glad to have come across it. I thank all those who created it and help make this site successful!

I'm a newbie and this is my first post. I hope I can get some good advice.

    I just bought a used 2000 Saab 9-3 SE.
    105,000 miles.
Very well maintained and in great condition, including new OES clutch.
The only problem is that I'm having a lot of trouble getting into Reverse gear. Every once in a while I can get into reverse smoothly. But most of the time I can't get into reverse gear at all!

If you're wondering how I get my keys out... I would hold the shift lever in the reverse gear position while at the same time taking the keys out. The shifter would actually lock in that position even though the reverse gear was not fully engaged. Would this cause any damage to the key lock?

All the other gears go in just fine, including 5th.

My mechanic (not a Saab specialist) tried adjusting the gear linkage to no avail. Since he nor I are Saab experts, I don't know if he did the adjustment properly.

Would I have to get a new Gear Box, even though all the other gears work just fine? When I spoke to the dealer, they suggested that I MAY have to replace the Reverse Gear Assembly, but won't be sure until they actually open it up. Of course, this won't be cheap. They also said that they don't make that part anymore for my make and model. Is this true?

Any suggestions? Or anything else I can tell my mechanic to try doing?

This may not be the solution, but worth a try.
If you remove the gaiter around the gear stick you should see a white plastic part to the right of the gear stick which acts as a stop to allow fifth gear and reverse to be engaged.
This part has a habit of 'popping out' of its housing (mine does it regularly) or breaking thereby making fifth gear 'sloppy' and making it difficult to engage reverse.
I got his information from this forum several months ago and I'm sure the post contained a photo of the part and maybe even a part number.
Perhaps someone can remember where and when this was?
My car has a manual gearbox, if yours is automatic I'm not sure that the above would apply.
