    Ignition lock cylinder

My key won't turn the ignition switch. '96 9000 CS, no signs of trouble prior...occasionaly would be difficult to turn the key, but rotating the steering wheel would release pressure. Now, I get a solid hit - no key rotation. I've tried moving the steering wheel, the gear shifter (automatic) and have tried rocking the car - no change. I've also sprayed WD40 and heated up the cylinder w/ hair dryer...Thanks for any suggestions.

Have you checked the key for damage?/tried the spare one?

Yes - same issue on both keys.

Sounds like something has come adrift inside the lock.

Can the ignition barrel be taken to pieces the same as the door locks?
I have seen door lock barrels being altered to fit existing keys when a new door lock is fitted.
I know it doesnt help but I just thought it might be an alternative to buying a whole new ignition barrel.

    Re: Ignition lock cylinder

I believe you can - I have heard this anyway - but I don't know how to take it apart. I'm told I have to turn the key, before I can remove the cylinder - but I can't turn the key...I also hear, if I can take the front cover off the cyliner - then I may be able to work the tumblers enough to turn the key and remove...

Any help getting the lock cylinder out - or removing the cylinder front cover will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Re: Ignition lock cylinder

Yes, you have to be able to turn the key to remove the cylinder.

There is a small hole to access a plunger that prevents the key popping out and this will only happen with the key in a certain position. To take the barrel out of the ignition lock, you will need to follow one of the procedures on a recent post here

If you can't rotate the key to get it out then you would need to use destructive methods to remove it.

A better bet might be to replace the lock set as a whole - they do pop up on the usual sites and SAABScene classifieds. That way you don't need to worry about having to get a lock to fit your key, although they are available and somewhere I posted the price on the 9000 forum. The ignition lock is about 70, done to fit key, but don't hold me to that. Also you will have to wait forit to arrive.

Edit by TB: Price would appear to be 85-89 = VAT
