    oil pump

Is the oil pump a week part on the 1987 Saab 9000 Turbo? And is it hard to change?

I know it will definately not be an easy fix, but i have no clue to as if it is a weak part on the 1987. If the oil pump goes though the oil light itself will come on, usually not just the check oil level light.

I don't know of any reliabilty issues with the pump on an '87 car (other than it is almost 20 years old). I once changed the crankshaft sprocket on a 88 CDE and it wasn't too difficult (you work in the wheel arch with the liner removed.) I can't recall the exact layout unfortunately. I'm about to change the pump in my 9-3 and that is a case of removing the cap that retains the crankshaft seal (large circlip) I can't remember if it is necessary to remove the timing cover which is a bit of a swine to do as it is sandwiched between the head and the sump. My old 9000 is in bits so I'll try and have a look tonight.

If my 94's and 95 9k oil pump is the same as that on your 87, I'd say the SAAB oil pump is an ingenious design. It is a very robust piece of equipment which almost never fails.

And that's the view you can get from the wheel arch.
