    HELP!!

Yesterday fitted a new front downpipe and rear silencer to my 93 9000 CSE, had a devil of a job removing the lambda probe, had to heat it then use a grinding disc to cut through the threaded section on the old pipe.
Seems as though some hi tech engineer had removed it previously and refitted it cross threaded.
Needless to say, the engine check light has now illuminated and the fuel consumption is drastic.
My question is, I have another probe, which came with the replacement downpipe, but unfortunately, the guy who removed it just cut the wires, instead of pulling the plug, so I have a probe with about 3ins of wire each connection.
Is it possible to make a join on these wires.
    Thanks in advance!!

Yes, you have to solder the connections and I used shrink wrap to insulate the joins. HTH

    Re: HELP!!

I have had the same on one of my 93 CSE's the join was made using a 3 way screw block! but I did have longer a "tail" so the could be cable tied up out of the way.

It seems to work well although I think it would be better replaced by proper connections.

    regards

    Bill A.

    Re: HELP!!

What values(ohms) should I get from the wires on a Lambda probe.
I have a spare which I need to fit, but there are 2 white wires and 1 black wire, how do you tell the difference between the white wires?.

You don't need to. They're either end of the heating element which isn't polarised.

I imagine that only the resistance between the white wires is meaningful and that changed as the years passed, getting lower and lower as more powerful heating was required to bring the probe into operation sooner and sooner for newer regulations. You should expect no more than 10 ohms, I think, and to be honest, if there's a problem, I'd expect it to be open-circuit.

    Re: HELP!!

The lambda sensor that I purchased at Eurocarparts is now installed and working, the engine check light has now gone off.
The fuel consumption figures are not yet back to normal but getting there.
I assume this is because the engine has to burn off the carbon build up during the 9mpg phase, and the new probe has to settle down.

Did you reset the average? If not, it will be presenting a moving average of all those miles at rubbish fuel economy and a few miles of decent economy.

If you haven't already done so, reset it by pressing the "R" button under the clock and holding for about four seconds until the MPG display shows "---". Then you will see only the average MPG since you reset it and that should give a better picture as it doesn't include the previous poor performance.

    Re: HELP!!

I forgot to mention earlier that I also extended the cables by a small amount so they now run over the top of the A/A compressor, not below and through the middle of the drive belt.
    This makes for easier removal/fitting.
So far, no adverse effect seen.
