can a duff Lambda/02 sensor play havoc with fuel consumption.

I am taking an educated guess here but Lamda should be close to 1.0 and therefore whilst mixture might be right and lamda reading low? or weak it will enrich the fuel to compensate which will increase consumption.
I think that is right but others may know more.
