White smoke
Hi, guys
New troubles with my 9K '91 Turbo TCS.
I had a leak at one of the coolant hoses at the throttle body. The repair was fixed swiftly by screwing the clamp. Then, after a good test ride, I got to my work and half way stopped to pick someone up, a massive dosis of white smoke came out the exhaust. The smell and colour indicated it was coolant. At work I had to top up the coolant. I checked the throttle body and it was wet on the under side.
Can coolant leak into the throttle body or did I blow the head gasket?????????
Many thanks
Steve

Re: White smoke
Given that you have had a leak at the throttle body, and it is now wet, it seems lilely that somehow your car is leaking at the throttle body and you are burning coolant.
This does not mean that your head gasket is bad, but if the above leak is causing the smoke then you must get it fixed ASAP before it does serious damage. Try completely fixing the throttle body leak and see how things are then.
Good luck!

Re: White smoke
Thanks, Aerohead for responding.
I'm looking for a technical drawing of the throttle body. Can anyone provide me with a scan or a link to where I might surf to?????
I'm taking the throttle body off this evening, instead of taking the clothes off my misses.
I'll let you know when I made progress.

Re: White smoke
Hi, guys
No luck!!!!!! Coolant can't leak into the throttle body. I checked the engine breathing pipe and I noticed that the inside was white sludge. Then, I checked the oil level and I had more oil than I've ever put in and it was very 'watery'.
Only conclusion: head gasket has blown!!!!!
Does anyone have useful tips and tricks for a swift replacement. I'm getting the head done at the same time.
Have a nice weekend, mine's pissed.

Re: White smoke
Sorry to hear it is what you feared.
Do a search and make certain you fix everything that needs sorting-out while you are in there.
Good Luck!

Re: White smoke
Search back on here, 9000 and c900 forums, I did both a 2.3T and a 2.0i last year and added pictures.

Re: White smoke
Voxan, it's not too bad a job, i've just finished mine a couple of weeks ago. The hardest part I found was one of the inlet manifold bolts and the tediousness of doing up the 4 self locking nuts on the turbo manifold as each only gets a few degrees per spanner effort.
With the head off it's a great opportunity to think about timing bits too.
As Scaero says, look back also search on "timing chains" as there's a great thread with step by step photos of the head job.
What you haven't said is the mileage of the car, might want to think about changing the valve stem seals too just to put some nice fresh ones in.

Re: White smoke
Thanks, guys for the tips.
The car has 290000 km. The head will be reworked and the valves get a check up. I leave it to the professional to change the valve stems.
I've just ordered the parts, including timing chain ,sprockets and sliders.
I hope I'll be driving soon.
Hasta la saabista!
