Should this be changed at a certain interval on my MY97 9000CSE 2.3 FTP manual?? And if so, what gearbox oil would people recommend?

IIRC, saab says to never replace it. However, I've replaced mine with saab synthetic. A lot of people in Sweden swear by Quaker State 10W-30.
If you do use synthetic, don't use anything other than the saab brand: they use special modifiers, that aren't used in other synthetics, and are specially formulated to counter the shear involved with the meshing of gears. If you are the original owner of this vehicle and have never had any problem with shifting gears, ie., no grinding, then it's probably not a critical maintenance issue. If you're unsure, then it's probably a pretty good idea to change it and get any metal that's on the magnetized drain plug out of there.
