They say I need a new transimission :(
Well, the local garage has determined that I need to replace the transmission on my 92, 9000S--at the tune of $3500.00. I have decided to get it towed for a second opinion . . .
The leak appears to be from drivers side, underneath transmission dip stick area. Is this something that can be fixed without replacement, or any advice?
I paid $2900.00 for it approx 8 months ago, and it doesn't seem logical to invest that much.
Is the transmission the heart of the car, or am I only asking for more trouble?
Thanks ahead

Re: They say I need a new transimission :(
Did they tell you why it was leaking? Cracked case, blown seal etc.?

Re: They say I need a new transimission :(
It depends on why and how badly it's leaking.
You should be able to pick up a 2nd hand gearbox for not to much $500 ish for a warrented non turbo one.
It wopuld take you and a pal about a day to change it if inclined.
If it's working OK, I'd look into where and why it's leaking thoughally before expending lots of cash. The end plate which is easily removed attaches only a few inches from the dip stick.

Sgould, no, they didn't say why it was leaking and I honestly didn't think to ask exactly what was causing the leaking (well, more like pouring).
Scaero, so you think it may be the gearbox rather than transmission? And I would have to pay rather than fix myself as I am female and unfortunately for me--took home economics rather than shop .
Thanks for all ideas

Neo,
Gearbox=transmission ...separated by a common language...
I forgot to say that I was talking about a manual 5speed box, I know auto's were common in america though. you didn't say which you have.

Re: They say I need a new transimission :(
I think you have an auto as you mentioned red fluid in your earlier post......I have just had a leaking auto box and it was one of the hoses to the transmission oil cooler. One of these fixes to the front of the transmission just below the dipstick and goes to the cooler, either in the engine radiator or beneath it I think.
However, I doubt your mechanic would have suggested a new 'box was needed if it was just a leak from a hose or from the filter housing unless they were trying to 'stitch you up'....'rip you off'or whatever your term for that is....... ( scam? )
I suggest you go back and ask them to tell you exactly what is wrong with the 'box that causes it to need replacing and to show you exactly where the leak is. They must have found that out to be able to say that it needs replacing. ( unless they are trying to 'scam' you )
If you take it elsewhere for a second opinion make sure you get all of the above information from them.......
I don't know what value a 1992 9000 has in the USA but here ( UK) they are worth diddleysquat and a new auto-box is probably at least twice the value of the car.........

Re: They say I need a new transimission :(
Thanks all for your thoughts. I talked to two transmission garages and they both questioned why I need a new transmission . . . beats me why, I don't know!
I have had the vehicle towed in for a second opinion from transmission specialist. He seemed to imply the leaking may be repairable without replacing the transmission--but I suppose I will see what he comes up with . At any rate, I will post back as my little trial may help someone some day .
Does anyone know why it did't tick, refuse to move, smoke, give me some kind of flashing lights on the dash board, or otherwise tell me that the transmission was dying or dead? My poor car

Re: They say I need a new transimission :(
I WAS the proud owner of a 1992, 9000S, for nearly 8 whole months. I even logged in 10,000 miles on her--but sadly, we have parted company . She desparately needs a new transmission--and previous to this, it was a gas pump, water pump, ABS sensors, and cv joints . Are we all nuts?
Though her transmission is shot, I was able to trade her in for $800.00, and acquire a 1990, black Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, with 73,000 miles, and for $4200--but I'll miss my SAAB . And of course, all of you wonderful Saab enthusists .
Goodbye all
