    Tires

Okay here's my dilema - When I got my '95 CS lpt, it came with these awful cooper tires that are driving me insane. They squeal on slight corners that they shouldn't, the drive wheels loose significant amounts of air in just a week, and they're really soft rubber so cornering isn't as much fun. But I also am very low on my car budget, so does anyone know of some good tires that are relatively cheap for the stock 15" rims? Or should I start saving and wait?

Hello Saab9000. If you do a search under "tyres" (note the UK English spelling) you'll find lots of recommendations and opinions.

I am not familiar with that make of tyre but I think I know where you’re coming from. When I get through my Nankangs, I will be driving on a Bridgestone road. I have an associate in the tyre industry (tyre fitter buddy) who had a nasty incident on a wet road when he was using dodgy rubber; he learnt his lesson that day, now he has nothing but Bridgestone tyres on his cars. I love the shape of my 9k CS, so it’s slow wet careful driving for me until I can stump up for some decent tyres.

I don't know if they are available in the US (they are a British make I think) but Avon ZV-1 seem very good tires for the money.

    Re: Tires

I have just replaced some Avon tyres - they only lasted 9000 miles before hitting the tread blocks and they sqeal like no other tyre i have ever had, I now have 4 Michelin Pilot Sports - and what a transformation. They are not the cheapest but having had a blow out at 70mph on a cheap tyre on my old Golf i will never skimp on cheap tyres again. Just remember the tyres are the only contact you have on the road.

Tyres affect braking, acceleration and handeling and for the sake of a few pounds is it worth it!

Avon are, I believe owned by Cooper of the US. (See Saab9000's original post)

    Re: Tires

I have got Avon ZV-1's on mine. They aren't the best but a good compromise between durability, price & grip. They are absolutely fine unless you are into serious track use.
Ironically Avon are owned by Cooper so you probably won't want them. Other sensible mid range choices would be Pirelli P6000's or Firestone Firehawks - both of which should be available in the states.
Best not to go for a budget brand

I'd be happy if mine lasted long enough to wear out! Living where I live, they usually get punctured (in the sidewall, natch) before then. Not noticed any squealing though... different tarmac maybe?

Not used them (yet). But the local tyre place had BF Goodrich Profilers as the first offer when I rang. Quite cheap. There was a recent report on them (in Which? ? - not sure) and it thought they were good value and quiet too.

Absolutely right..... and next time try the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres, you won't get a lot of miles from them but you'll have a lot of grip
