I was sitting here thinking it would be good if there was a Saab jargon buster.
Saabscene is incredibly informative already - it's just sometimes jargon creeps in.
Of course I know TCS is traction control system, and now realise a Dump Valve can't be found in the bathroom or that a Cone Filter isn't sold by Mr Whippy with a chocolate flake in it.
Or is there a link somewhere else?
I've got no idea how this would be written, descriptions agreed or who on earth would have the time to put it together.
Just an idle thought
I'll revert to "search" if I get stuck

Excellent suggestion

! It could perhaps take the form of an icon on each page that would open up a new page for quick browsing of terms. Perhaps even some small pics to show how some items look like.
Great idea. Let's kick it off here (as good a place as any) and then maybe someone can collate the info for us to include on SSc like the buyers guide and mugshots.
Here's some to get going:

[*]C900 - Classic 900 M79-93
It's written on the side of my "bike" avatar.
I'll need some help with these:
[*]B202 - 2.0litre, 4-cylinder engine with dohc
[*]B204 - 2.0litre, 4-cylinder engine with dohc and twin balancer shafts (9000, GM900, 9-3)
[*]B234 - 2.3litre, 4-cylinder engine with dohc and twin balancer shafts (9000, GM900, 9-3)
[*]B235 - 2.3litre, 4-cylinder engine with dohc and twin balancer shafts (9-5)
Can someone fill in the letter suffixes (E, R etc)?
Adrian W
18 Nov 2003, 21:34
B235R (9-3 Viggen 9-5 Aero)
B205R (9-3 Aero/SE HOT)
B234R (9000 Aero 225 hp)
B234L (9000 CSE 200 hp models)
B234E (LPT intercooled)
note: the B234R was not used in the 9-3 to my knowledge, though the B234 with another suffix was used as the naturally aspirated 2.3L I think.

No-one's mentioned the most important one:-
SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed

Not anymore! SAAB now stands for:
Saab Automobile Aktiebolaget, or Saab Auto AB, sorry - I forget what year it changed but may have coincided with Investor AB selling a large shareholding to General Motors in the 1980s - or it may have been earlier?
Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget means Swedish Airplane Company.
How about:
GM - General Motors
VIN - Vehicle Identification Number
DRL - Daytime/light Running Lights/Lamps (not sure which is offical)
OnStar - US Only Built-in Mobile Phone System
There are a couple of American to proper English translations that may be useful:
Sway bar - Anti-roll Bar
Rotor - Brake Disc
Sedan - Saloon
Wagon - Estate
Also, not entirely SAAB related, but Honda used to always refer to ABS as ALB (not sure if they still do).

[*]Head Unit - radio/cassette/CD etc
[*]Body in white - manufacturer's term for the body shell prior to painting or the car's structure
[*]Instrument panel (IP) - dash board
[*]cockpit - mainland European term (esp German) for IP
[*]Combimeter - instrument cluster (speedo, fuel gauge etc, what many call instrument panel)
[*]headliner - roof interior lining
[*]mirror triangle - trim piece at front end of door glass inside rear view mirror mounting position

I think the most accurate literal trasnlation is something like Swedish Airplane Shared Stock. That's what a friend of mine in Sweden told me anyway. Might hafta bug her about it again sometime.

Very literal. Shared stock being plc (UK), AB (Sweden), AG (Germany) etc.
Anyway, can we get this thread back on topic, please?

Since this started off as jargon rather than just acronyms - good idea too - might be worth adding
eco = ecopower, ie light pressure turbo

OK, there's a few had an attempt at so called "humour" and circumnavigating the swear filter. Others may disagree, but personally I find it neither big nor clever .
This is an excellent idea as a thread which can easily be turned into a valuable resource for us all

. Let's not make the task any more tedious than needs be by filling it up with unnecessary items

.
I know, it can well be argued that I'm equally as guilty for posting this, but I hope it puts this thread into context .

WOT - wide open throttle
Stefano
22 Nov 2003, 17:51
FPR=fuel pressure regulator
CC=cruise control
I never realized if ECOpower would stand for economic or ecologic... somebody knows?
Edit: what would have been of Saab without...
APC=adaptive performance control
Boost control, intented to manage boost to avoid knock. It adapts to engine and fuel conditions.

Some more:
CPS crankshaft position sensor
TDC top dead center, the closest to the head position the piston can reach
BDT bottom dead center, the opposite of TDC
WG wastegate valve, it controls the boost in turbos.
