Hi,

Bought a 1.9 TiD 9-5 Estate (06 Dame Edna) from Western Saab in Glasgow in Feb. No complaints, the car is great. However, Western have called recently telling me that the car is due a service. I'm not convinced that this is really required though and think they may just be trying squeeze a few more £££ out of me.

1st point is that the service book says the car is only due a service every 18000 miles or every 2 years. The last service was this time last year at 36k miles and the car is now only sitting at 45k.

2nd thing is that I was under the impression that the car would tell me when a service was needed, and nothing has flashed up on the display yet.

Finally, I think its more than a little cheeky that they sell you a car in Feb and want another £250 off you 5 months later for a service!!

I've discussed all this with them and they still insist a service is required.

Any opinions/advice welcome. Is an annual service necessary or should I wait for the recommended service intervals/the car to tell me?

Thanks,

NedLudd

18k miles or every year, surely? Which would explain their thinking.

Generally service intervals are given by the service book or SID which ever is first. However for information I had an 06 9-3 and that was 18000, 2 years or SID but 07 and on are 18000, 1 year or SID and maybe Western are thinking that you have an MY07, I know you have a 9-5 but there has been a change in SAAB's thinking. Look at your owners manual to work out the Model Year from the VIN, it might be worth contacting SAAB with your VIN and asking for a definitive answer just in case your car is right on the change from 2year to 1 year servicing.

Up to you, but if you want the car to last you, I wouldn't run any car for more than a year without at least an oil and filter change.

TiD engines require servicing every 18,000 miles or once a year, TD engines require servicing evey 20,000 miles or once every 2 years. What was the milage at when you bought the car and when was the date of the last service, if your car was over 30,000 miles or it had been 9 months since its last service then they should have serviced it for you.

Thanks All,

I think I'll contact Saab with the VIN number and take it from there. Seems to be a mix up somewhere, service book def says 18000 miles/2 years.

Dennis Eves makes a good point, in my view even on a 2 year service interval it's worth getting an oil and filter change after a year because it minimises wear.
