Hi Guys

At idle speed with the aircon on(which seems to work fine) as I turn the steering a fairly loud juddering noise starts, if I turn off the aircon it stops?

I have recently had the Aux belt and tensioner changed so I know this is fine.

Does anybody else have this problem, what could it be???? Compressor maybe?

Cheers

Hmmn, you mention you had the belt and tensioner changed..... did you used to have the long belt with the middle pulley and now have the shorter belt that bypasses the middle pulley?

A very common source of customer complaints that one "since you did my service..." so much so that when SAAB no longer supplied the bits for the long belt we sourced them elsewhere. Mine needs a longer belt as it's so damn noisy with the short one.

Do you get the judder too? with the short one.

Would the long belt fix it?
quinophex
Yes, mine judders with the short belt, in fact most of them judder with the short belt if they used to have the long belt. All we used to do was put a middle pulley on and the long belt.
MagnusPaisley
Great, thanks I'll try source a long belt then.....I was about to try changing compressors etc

cheers

is this the right one mate?

Looks like it, make sure you still have the middle pulley, if you don't you're going to need one. I'd also advise trying somewhere like euro car parts or similar as a belt from there will be more like £15. I /think/ you want a 6pk2315 but don't quote me on that!

98 2.3 auto 9.5. I've had my car 2 yrs with the same type of rattling you describe. Full lock parking/reverse parking it rattles but drives quiet and smooth. Today I put my fingers under the top engine mount and I have a free wheeling pulley . So, do I put the long belt on and will this cure it. Can it be done from under the bonnet with the top mount removed and sump suitably supported. Thx.

Probably.

Yes, but you'll also need to remove the front right wheel and the plastic engine guard so you can access the crankshaft pulley etc. Make sure you have a picture of how the belt is threaded so you get it right.

See here for a useful guide.

Yep I still have the middle pulley, Ordered a long belt then I'll see if it cures it. I have just heard that apparently the discontinued long belt has just been recalled/reinstated as this short belt is throwing up problems because of the long length between the two bottom pulleys.

Good to know only the long belt is pretty expensive around 60 pounds for Saab one. If it sorts the low idle judder it's worth it in my book. I'll keep posted the results.

I've just spoken to Euro Car Parts and the long belt is £19.09 inc. vat. Its definitely the long belt?. Yes it is Sir. Next day delivery. It will be interesting to see if it takes away the rattle. Do yours first and let us know.

Yeah, I think that I could order the parts again for the long belt before I stopped fixing SAAB's for the day job. I really hope it does fix it for you!

There's a picture of the belt run in the owners manual and an interesting link from SS66 on how to access the pulleys. I'm still not sure if I'll do the job myself as I've had 2 pulleys, tensioner and short belt fitted at different times to try and eliminate the noise. Off on my jollys for a week and will catch up then.
MagnusPaisley
Me too.. on hols that is.

I've ordered the long belt and will fit it back end of next week. I'll keep you posted on the outcome........I'll be guinea pig.....Squeek ;-)

Cheers

Hi All

It is with utter delight I can happily say the problem is fixed. After fitting the long belt (that has been recalled back into the Saab parts bin) the problem has definitely gone.

I did an Oil change at the same time and she is going absolutely brilliant now. Just given her a polish too.

SO if you have a juddering on your steering don't do what I did and waste money trying lots of things, just try a long belt again.

Very happy. biggrin.gif

Hah, another one where the long belt has fixed the problem! Why the hell SAAB ever thought a short belt was a good idea I don't know... I really must get mine done soon.
MagnusPaisley
Yep it's definitley fixed it done a long trip yesterday and not a single judder or squeek.

Well happy, do yours and let me know if it fixes it...

Cheers

Oh, I know it's the belt on mine. That's the main reason I've not done it, it's noisy and annoys our nosey neighbours so I'll leave it a bit longer yet ooo.gif

Back from my jollys and glad to hear the long belt works. I'll go to ECP and order one and let you know the outcome. Thx for all the good info.

Got the belt today,Continental from ECP £19.09, all 8 foot of it, and I'm having it fitted on Saturday. These days the old bones dont take kindly to crawling under the car. Hope I have the same results as you and the noise goes or the car goes, one or the other.

Hi Magnus Paisley & Quinoflex. I havent forgotten you I've been away. ECP dont do the long belt. The one I got from them was the same as the one on the car. When I queried this they said their records werent upto date with Saabs. The belt I have is about 8' 4" so the garage put it on anyway as they didnt know till the old one was off. The new belt now makes a noise like WEEEEEE for about 1/2 mile and goes off. My rattle is much quieter but I'd like to know where you got your belts from, part number and cost please. Thx.
quinophex
I think it's a PK2615 belt you want... the wheeee noise might be a dodgy idler wheel.
