I've jsut been into Halfords for some Mobil 1 0/40, but they only seem to be stocking turbo diesel in this spec'. Do you think this is meant for turbos AND diesels, rather than turbo-diesels?
Thanks

It's meant for Diesels only.

Sorry Toby, but I disagree. Check the grade classifications & specs from ACEA etc on the side of the can - best to check those, not just the viscosity. If they match what is stated in your drivers handbook, then it will be fine. I used Shell Ultra Helix fully synth to top up my 3.0 TiD when I had it, and that was an oil that was not specifically for diesels, just happened to be the right specification. Oils "for turbo-diesels" tend to be at least as good as regular synthetic oils as they have a harder job to deal with.

When Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel first came out I called Mobil and asked about it. They inferred that it was a triumph of marketing over common sense, and that the only difference was the labelling. The original Mobil 1 product was good enough for any engine, but to increase sales to diesel owners they decided to relabel it.
Marvellous isn't it.

Instead they have simply caused confusion with this customer . I want to use it in my 9000 Aero.
Just to be sure, can I take it that the "grade classifications & specs from ACEA" on the side of the can should be the same between the 'ordinary' 0/40 (which they had in the 1 litre bottles) and the 'turbo diesel' in the 4 litre cans, but only if they are indeed the same oil?
Thanks

You could have two oils meeting exactly the same specs, but having different additive packages. Why don't you buy the 4 litre pots of "petrol labelled" Mobil 1 rather than the "diesel labelled" product.

Hi Mark
I am rather limited for local suppliers and my local Halfords only have 1 litre pots of striaght 0/40 and 4 litre tubs of the turbo diesel 0/40. I just wondered if the absence of the striaght 0/40 was because the one labelled 'turbo diesel' was actually intended for turbos and diesels and was actually a change in labelling...hence there be no 'straight' 0/40.
On the back of the turbo-diesel 0/40 it says that it is suitable for all engines...but it wasn't clear whether they were talking about Mobil 1 in general or specifically the 'turbo diesel' oil.
I think I have just been confusing myself.
I think I'll just look further afield for the non turbo-diesel oil.

Isn't there a phone number for Mobil's technical people on the back label? A quick call may confirm that they are the same product, or equally suitable.

I agree with Fliptop. The viscosity is just as important as specification. My 3.0Tid requires 5W 40, which mobil won't sell in UK. When the dealer replaces it he uses Saab 5W40 synthetic oil, which he told me was Mobil 1 with Saab badge.
Didn't just take his word for it but decided to investigate. I couldn't find any Mobil product in UK that met 5w40 viscosity and grade, but in France they sell a lot of 5w40 and guess what, "Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel" in 5 ltr tub for about £27. I then contacted Mobil (very helpfull) and said they said that French traditionally have used this grade in their diesels for years and whilst it's not sold here, it is there. AS I live about half an hour from Channel Tunnel, I then buy oil when I go on a booze cruise. Dealer is happy to use oil I supply and reduces my bill by about £50
By the way I noticed that halfords have started selling a fully synth. 5w40 which meets full specs for my car and its quite a bit cheaper.Does anyone know anything about this?

do a search for mobil. You can then e mail. When I did this I got a reply within an hour. By the way, their office is in Leatherhead , Surrey, but I'm afraid I don't have phone number.
