Why not put the diesel round the track? we already have another diesel registered

Yes, Anglesey is very much about how you can drive the car, rather than absolute grunt http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/fawlty.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Andrew [/b]Weeeelll, I have contemplated this but I've 3 nagging doubts...

1. Killing my tyres (it is a heavy understeery beast)
2. Bending it
3. Killing my tyres (did I mention that??)

I'd rather find a cheap old V4 or 99 or summat more chuckable, than use my daily hack.

I'll think on it...

[/b]Mark - that does indeed describe the 2.2 TiD but the 3.0 is anything but grunty low down, it's gutless till just under 2000 then all hell breaks loose. Which can be fun but doesn't half make the tyres light up in tight twisty bits But I could learn to drive it better I s'pose... http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

[/b]1. My tyres still looked like new after Anglesey last year. It was raining - which was kinder on the tyres - even so, the track at Anglesey is a proper tractive tarmac surface for the championship circuit. You are unlikely to see the mammoth tyre damage such as that inflicted by the Elvington concrete surface.

2. There are professional instructors on hand all day for FREE instruction. There is no reason why you should bend the car unless you drive beyond your abilites or those of your vehicle. Infact, given that it is a properly marshalled event you are likely to be safer and have less chance of an accident than driving on an A-road

3. DO NOT let Elvington be your yardstick for tyre wear. The surface there is different to the surfaces on proper circuits. My experience of Anglesey and Goodwood is that tyre wear need not be destructive like a "cheap" airfield day.

1989agoodvintage
05-07-2004, 08:08 AM
Even my Toyo's showed no more sign of wear other than a slight feathering at the edge and these things are pretty soft. A year on, they're still going strong and if I swap them round at midday on the 9th, they should be fine to get me home. I will try and get hold of a spare pair of 16" wheels to be on the safe side though!

IMHO, You'll only incur heavy tyre wear at Anglesey if;

a) it's very hot/dry
B) you're a bit of a sideways driving addict!

potto
05-07-2004, 08:12 AM
Chaps - I do understand that a proper track won't be anywhere near as abrasive as the Elvington concrete, I also know how easy it would be to kill the front tyres on my "turbo (-diesel) nutter barge" (maybe oil tanker is a better analogy ).

WRT driving beyond my abilities (not hard http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif ) or the car's (slightly harder I suspect ), I have done a little track stuff, enough to know that you'd have to be being a bit daft to get into real trouble...but when I need the car for work as much as I do, it makes me nervous.

As for my sideways addiction (and I got a good fix last week ) the ABS pretty much rules that out, at least from a left-foot perspective

I suspect though that, like I was saying to Jason on Sunday, I have a bit of a hankering for a toy to play with on this sort of event...

Like I said, I'll think on it...

Indeed. The most challenging bit is going to be persuading SWMBO that:
<ul type="square">
while we do need to have a new garage roof, to stop my toys & associated bits getting wet, we really don't need to re-do the en suite this year after all...
I will have time to sort out the new 96 when I get it (soon! ), plus keep the toy going, look after the garden, work AND spend time with the family
[/list]

Well what's the worst that can happen, divorce I suppose http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Places are going quickly now, just a handful left.

If you want to drive you need to get your booking in (http://www.saabtrackday.co.uk/ssctd04/booking.html) soon.

All very welcome but it would be nice to see some more Sonett/96/90/99/c900 and 9-5's

Looking forward to seeing you in 8 weeks.

Andrew.

Sorry to 'butt' in on the post, but I have to say.....:

I am very envious of the whole day you guys are having. I have done a few track and rally days (none of which in my saab) and really wish I could have made this event to have a go in my saab and meet all you guys...

Have a fantastic day all.... be safe and have GREAT fun.... http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
