Sorry to appear like a luddite- but what on earth is 'bumping'?

Bumping is when you post a spurious reply to a thread simply to bump it back up to the top of the list.

Usually see posts with just:

bttt

i.e. Back to the top.

Boing!

Help! I am a luddite!!!!
I still don't understand...you mean that someone will just post a reply to get their name at the top of the list?
Or to restart the original query and bypass all the replies?

No its to make it go back to the top of the list so people notice it in the forums, and possibly give more help and advice.

If someone has posted a thread and no-one has replied for a few days, it will move down the list of threads (ordered by date) within the particular board.

As it moves down the list it is less likely to be noticed, so people "bump" the topic by posting a spurious response, this gives it an up to date response and puts it back up to the top of the list.

Here's an example:

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=201200

Chap has a bit to sell for his Impreza, to keep it from slipping out of people's view, he posts "top" and "Btt" so it is more likely to be seen.

Hope that helps.

At least 'btt' is marginally less irritating than

=^=^~^~^B U M P^~^~^=^=

which one sees annoyingly often on other boards ...

I think I would get the message if my posting started slipping down the board with no responses
