: Difficult to get 2nd Gear

Hi all

I have a 03 9-3SS Aero with the 6 speed box, and i am finding it increasingly more difficult to select 2nd gear. It's mostly when i'm changing down from 3rd, the lever seems to go too far to the left (towards reverse) and then won't drop down into 2nd, i find that i have to juggle around with the lever to get it in gear and this is most embarrasing when you've coasted to a halt half way round a traffic island.
Has anyone else had this?, is it reparable?
thanks

Welcome to Saabscene.

Your car is under warranty. Take it to a dealer have them sort the problem.

IIRC there have been issues with some 6-spd boxes on the Aero before. A search of this forum might reveal more.

Thanks /john

I am planning to take it back to the dealer, but i wanted to know a bit more myself first, i don't want to get fobbed off with some lame excuse (SAABS are all like that, it's the character of the car etc.) as they say "forwarned is forarmed"

Fair enough, no harm in asking eh? That said, /john's advice is bang on. Suffice to say they are NOT all like that and yours should not be doing that! Just be firm and polite and explin that you are not happy with the car in this state - it's dangerous more than embarrassing.

Some dealers are better than others, but all should be more than sympathetic about your problem. In my experience, if you get no joy convincing a dealer of a problem ("we couldn't make it do that, sir" then just take their tech out with you on a test drive and demonstrate it to them. Never fails! And anyway, most of the dealers are very good anyway so you shouldnt need to...

Good luck getting it sorted, quickly! Make sure you insist (nicely!) on a decent courtesy car while it's being repaired if necessary, though hopefully it could just be a simple linkage adjustment problem.

FWIW my 9-5 gear linkage virtually seized up on the way home from the dealer when I first bought it (only done 85 miles but sat on their forecourt for 6 months) http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif Just needed lubing and a bit of adjustment to sort, took 30 mins.

ok, I will do the search (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?/ubb/search.html) for you

9-3 AERO GEAR BOX (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/21/349.html#000000)

9-3 Aero Steering & Gearbox (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/21/351.html#000000)

Comments on having Aero for 1 week from new. (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/21/354.html#000000)

9-3 Aero - New 6 Sp Gear Box (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/21/357.html#000000)

6 SP GEARBOX (http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/21/516.html#000000)

So, if you have a look you will find that problems with second gear on the six-speed gearbox are not unusual. Now you can take it back to your dealer and when he says "They all do that, Sir", he will not be a million miles from the truth
