: Next diesel engine for the 9-3?

Hello all,

When I last talked to someone at my Saab dealership I asked if he had any insight into the next kind of engine that might be out in the 9-3SS.

As usual he only had a vague idea it might be the Alfa-Romeo 2.4 litre 5 cylinder unit as opposed to the 3.0 litre V6 that's currently in the 9-5.

Is it a straight 5 or a "V5" ?

I've heard only good things about the 5 cylinder unit - refined but sporty when pushed.

Do you think Saab will leave the 3.0 litre V6 in the 9-5 only ?

Timewise I've heard the new diesel engine is supposed to be introduced at the end of 2003 - hope this is true as I'd love to try it out ASAP !!

Cheers now

Bill

thrue,

in next years the 9-3SS will be equipped with the 1.9jtd 140hp and the 2.4jtd with I think 163hp.
the 3.0 diesel engine will probably never make it into the 9-3SS, but will get more hp in the next years. I've heard something close to or over 200hp, but that hasn't been confirmed yet

regards,
Marc

Why do you think Saab will introduce an Alfa engine?
After all, Saab is part of the GM-group and not the Fiat group. So, I doubt this information a little.

The information I have is that GM is working on some common rail diesel engines, but this is a long term project. Meaning a new diesel for the 9-3SS shouldn't be expected too soon.

I think this discussion is best moved to the New 9-3SS forum.

edit: done!

lets not forget that saab & 'fiat' have joined forces before, with the 9000/fiat croma/lancia thema platform... (I think I got the fiat cars correct?)
From what I've read, the italians lead the way with common rail technology, I don't think they will be using the current JTD engine, but a new one in development.

*[/b]Yes you do remember correctly GM have a 20% share in Fiat.Funny how most manufacturers are linked nowadays http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Gents
The Alfa engine is currently a 10 valve straight five with 150 bhp and 225 lb ft of torque. 178 Co2 for the company car drivers. It is an absolute gem - pulls from below 1,000rpm, comes on song at 1,800 and goes like a train up to the 5,000 soft cut rev limiter. Next year there should be a 20 valve head coming - 170 bhp plus 250 lb ft. That should be a real corker!
As mentioned, so many manufacturers are "in bed" with each other, so i wouldn't worry. After all the 9000 and the Alfa 164 were brother and sister!!

* [/b]Yes, by the time they got from the drawing board to the production line, they shared fewer than twenty common components - mostly around the front doors!!! http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Fiat sold the 20% it owned yesterday of GM to some banks for 1.2 Billion dollars cash.

But the seperate GM-Fiat powertrain company (which is why Saab will benefit from european diesels soon..) is still going strong.

Going slightly off-topic, but it'd be nice to see Saab using Alfa's 3.0 V6 instead of the current GM unit. Especially since there are a couple of aftermarket twin-turbo conversions out there

Funny how most manufacturers are linked nowadays *[/b].

Just picked up on this thread but regards Saabmans comment above that's probably why a lot of cars look the same.
