AutoExpress: Saab Chooses 9-X Factor
The stunning 9-3X driven on might not be destined for production, but Saab has something even wilder up its sleeve – a road-going version of its dramatic 9-X.
We [autoexpress] first revealed the 3.0-litre hatchback in issue 667, but until now there's been uncertainty about whether the concept will get built.
However, Saab's head of advanced design, Anthony Lo – who worked on the 9-X concept – has confirmed that one future 9-3 variant "will look very much like the 9-X".
This is most likely to take the form of an Audi A3 rival based on the soon-to-be-launched 9-3 range. The car could be mechanically similar to the concept, and that would mean a 300bhp V6 turbo capable of powering it from 0-60mph in under six seconds, and a top speed of more than 150mph.
Four-wheel-drive, which will be available for the first time on the new 9-3 range, should also make an appearance, and styling cues could even come from the 9-3X.
Next-generation 9-3 and 9-5 models will continue to use turbocharged five and six-cylinder engines, and that paves the way for Saab's four-cylinder variable compression turbo engine to make its debut in the A3 rival, tipped to be named the 9-2. The firm has also confirmed that a follow-up to the popular 9-3 convertible will arrive in late 2003.
