: Saabs on TV recently
kprm77 04-29-2002, 09:49 AM Nice to see that Ulrika Jonsson is driving a 9-5 Estate, whereas Sven Goran Eriksson is driving a Volvo.
Also Kevin Whately in Auf Wiedersehen Pet last night in his silver 900i.
Jimmy Nail was driving it when I saw it. Didn't Jimmy Nail drive a Saab in "Spender" - or am I imagining that?
kprm77 04-29-2002, 10:05 AM I'll have to watch a repeat now as I can't be sure who it was.
See you're at 999 posts. Only one more......
Drum roll...............
Wow, I hadn't noticed
Come to think of it, I think Jimmy Nail drove a Sierra Cosworth in Spender, but I am sure he has driven a Saab somewhere else?
kprm77 04-29-2002, 10:29 AM Think there was a 900 Carlsson in the Paradise Club though that was "Dirty Den" (forgotton his real name).
rob123 04-29-2002, 10:40 AM Prof Ryan in Silent Witness had a Silver 9.5 and one of the Vets in Vets in Practice has a grey
9.5 estate .
SteveN 04-29-2002, 10:46 AM Three TV Saabs spring to mind: John Hannah drives a silver 3 door C900 as Inspector Rebus (as does the character in the books). Iain Glenn also did in “Glasgow Kiss” and James Nesbit drives a green 5 door K reg. C900 in “Cold Feet”. Is there a pattern forming here? Do TV execs see the Classic 900 as the car for rugged, witty, independent guys?
gassy 04-29-2002, 10:56 AM As someone who "discovered" Inspector Rebus only recently, I didn't realise any of the books had been televised.
Can you give me more information SteveN - is it currently broadcast?
captain aero 04-29-2002, 02:03 PM Neil Pearson's character in "Between the lines" the police internal inestigation series, drove a classic 900 - apparently sales of the model increased significantly when this series was shown a few years ago.
(PS Didn't Spender drive a silver 5 Series?).
markcanderson 04-29-2002, 03:43 PM I think Jimmy Nail had a grey Cossie.. I always wondered how a cop could have paid for one of those then...
£23,000 for the car + £23,000 for the insurance in bonny Newcastle.

1989agoodvintage 04-29-2002, 04:09 PM Steve Owen in Eastenders - used to drive a metallic blue 9-3 coupe. Yes, Saabs are favoured by shady nightclub owners according to that group of scriptwriters.
MartinR 04-30-2002, 08:35 AM OK, I admit it...
The car that chased Tim ("Tin-Head") and Christy Murray in Brookside when they did the drink scam was a 9-3 - also pretty shady characters. Also, in a recent flash-back by Max Farnham to his wife's accident showed a white C900. Come to think of it, didn't Susannah Farnham have a 900 conv?
MR
not a habit, I could quit anytime...
gassy 04-30-2002, 10:38 AM Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad,
http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
ksowden1 05-06-2002, 03:19 PM Hang on, the most famous and I'm surprised overlooked Saab driver has to be gangster Barry Grant out of Brookside. He had a different 9000 for every day of the week and they were always turbos. he's now a nutcase bobby in the bill.
I watched Swordfish this weekend (John Travolta, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle) - Halle Berry drives a Jag (XKR?) droptop. She also has a Saab 9-3 Convertible.
pedrycymro 05-11-2002, 02:20 PM How about this?
Human League - Don't you want me video, features not one BUT 2 classic hatchbacks from the 1970's:
a Rover SD1, and a
99 Turbo Combi Coupe in BLACK
featured on VH1 classic.
vadonald 05-11-2002, 05:35 PM Theres a Saab convertible often shown in http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif ahem - Coronation Street - the owner of the corner shop.
I believe he used to drive a black one, but this week its a silver colour maybe he's gone from a 900 to a 9-3 - haven't been that bothered to check.
Every time I spot a Saab on t.v., my wife says she'll buy me an anorak - maybe it's cos I can tell its a Saab after seeing something like door handle (interior - exterior would be easy)
I thought that I drove a Saab cos they weren't that common - seems they're everywhere, maybe people are dicovering just how good Saab's really are.
MartinR 05-12-2002, 02:52 AM In "Teachers" (C4 Weds) the head was driving a 9-5. Not a good ad for Saab.....
Come to think of it, my headmaster had a 99.
MR
martin jebbett 05-12-2002, 03:16 PM Not really on tv,but does anybody remember the 99t in the "dont you want me baby" video by the human league?
pedrycymro 05-12-2002, 03:26 PM Not really on tv,but does anybody remember the 99t in the "dont you want me baby" video by the human league? *[/b]Errr Yes!! See above
martin jebbett 05-12-2002, 03:32 PM Sorry just scrolled to the bottom didnt bother to read the other posts, and yes i do feel a t**t
pedrycymro 05-12-2002, 03:35 PM no worries!
I'm quite glad I wasn't the only one who noticed
Simon Licence 06-15-2002, 05:51 AM The video for the new single by 'Korn' ('Here to stay')features a classic 900 convertible crashing into another car and the driver gets out and starts kicking the other car!
alexander.man 06-29-2002, 04:38 PM Another Saab in a pop video... it's at the start when a young couple driving a classic 900 (Turbo?) runs over the lead singer of James in 'Just like Fred Astaire'! Mmmmmm... could be a good or bad depending on your taste in music!
Alexander
Simon Licence 06-30-2002, 10:24 AM Going back to the 'Human League' video, there was a program a couple of years ago about them that interviewed Martin Ware and Ian Craig-Marsh of 'Heaven 17' (They being the founder members of the 'Human League').
The interview was conducted in a car park with the two of them sitting on the bonnet of an early eighties 900 Turbo with the reel to reel tape player they used on stage for their first gigs on the bonnet between them.
andrastauk 06-30-2002, 04:21 PM Can't see if this ones been done already
Saab 900GLS on Midsommer Murders!
SteveN 06-30-2002, 04:33 PM To post that you must have got up in the middle of the prog At least I waited for the adverts, proving I am not nearly so sad (or is that the other way round )
andrastauk 06-30-2002, 06:36 PM And SteveN because I was 'sadder' then you this time ( )I got there first Nurh
Atherton 07-03-2002, 11:40 AM Ok just in case you thought this had been put to bed!!! The video for Rabbit in your headlights by UNKLE features a C900 running a tramp over in a tunnel (nice) and Meg Ryan drives a metallic blue C900 in City of Angels. The guy who carried on writing James Bond books after Ian Fleming died put 007 into a 900 Turbo..what else!!!
Joel Whittle 11-21-2002, 05:28 PM Is that a white Saab 90 (?) on the latest Ford Mondeo ad?
It's the 'safer place to be' one, with the over-bearing relative kissing all the kids. The lad who's dangling upside down hides in the Mondeo.
I think it's a 2 door with a red diagonal stripe - hard to tell when it's upside down.
Guy Humpage 11-22-2002, 03:09 AM Is it not a Fiesta is the opening of the Ford ad?
Also, talking of the non-Fleming James Bond books, Bond gets a (non-modified) Saab 9000 as well.
Finally, an entry of my own to the topic, there are Police 9000s in the film 'Dumb and Dumber'
Finally, an entry of my own to the topic, there are Police 9000s in the film 'Dumb and Dumber'[/b]That is because the Aspen police actually use Saabs in real life.
ksowden1 11-24-2002, 01:09 PM Seinfeld drives a Saab 900, and another famous Saab sighting was when the guy out of Vindaloo song (Keith Allen I think is his name?) was playing a baddie in a detective series on ITV (Insp Morse possibly?) and he clained to be the devil and the car he drove around the countryside like a maniac....900 Carlsson of course. It was either a red or a black one. It seems that even Lucifer is partial to the Swedes.
Aeroguy 11-24-2002, 01:21 PM The big and I mean big detective in Pie in The Sky always drove a C900. Probably the only car he'd get into
Aeroguy 11-24-2002, 01:27 PM Just remembered another one. In the first ever series of Bugs they blew a Saab 9000 I think it was to bits outside a tower block after a car chase. Now who's got my anorak
Simon Licence 11-24-2002, 01:49 PM The episode of Inspector Morse with Keith Allen was called 'Day of the Devil' and featured a Black 900T16S. I think, though, that Keith Allen didn't get to drive it, only hide in the back whilst Harriet Walter drove it wildly through the countryside.
welshwizard 11-24-2002, 03:25 PM Another TV programme
dalziel and Pascoe - the older chap drove a classic 900...
MartinR 11-25-2002, 02:15 AM Not exactly recent but did anyone remember "House of Cards" with Ian Richardson (think that's his name)? He had his assistant blown up in her C900 conv. I remember thinking at the time that it was a terrible waste of a good car.
MR
Joel Whittle 11-25-2002, 11:28 AM Apparently the character played by Helen Baxendale has her C900 written off by a dust cart in the next series of Cold Feet.
1989agoodvintage 11-25-2002, 12:00 PM Can't they use a Volvo and pretend it's a C900?
ksowden1 11-25-2002, 03:46 PM I stand corrected about the 900 in Morse, still a bloody nice car though. Seems strange how we remember all these what on the face of seem inconsequential facts about TV programs....or as my missus puts it...absolutely bloody sad! http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

MR[/b]Hey whats wrong with teachers? Teachers are cool!
erm, my father used to be a teacher, and he has driven 96 two-stroke, 96V4, 99GL and GM900 ...and now he is driving my 99GL to school where he pops in part time.
MBeest 12-06-2002, 08:22 AM And another couple to go with,
Amanda Burton (in Silent Witness) drove a silver 9-5 Aero saloon (2002 model),
and does anyone remember an early evening soap called Triangle on in the very early 80's? It was about a shipping line (and the goings-on on board the boat) - well Kate O'Mara drove an early c900 three door turbo (8v in those days of course, but I think it might have been one of the first with a 5-sp gearbox). If memory serves me correctly (!) they also used Saab front seats on a castored base as office chairs on that program too.
And finally, Jimmy Nail did have a c900 (just a 900i I think) in Auf Wiedersehen Pet, it was the most recent series that was on in May/June this year.

Simon Licence 12-07-2002, 03:42 AM There used to be sitcom on Channel 4 (I can't remember the name) written by Daniel Peacock. It was sort of in the Adrian Mole style about a boy in love with a girl at his school. In it Tony 'Baldrick' Robinson played the headmaster who drove a SAAB. It was I think a carb fueled 900 five door. In one episode the kids find web cam footage showing the headmaster reversing the SAAB into another car, checking the damage and when he sees that his car is undamaged (the other car is), he makes sure no-one is watching a re-parks and pretends nothing happened!
Julian 12-07-2002, 05:09 AM Anyone seen the advert for the new PS2 game. I forget the name (!) but it's something like The Getaway or sommat.
Anyhoo, looks like there is a black 9-3 featured heavily in the game
There is a classic 900 on the website for the game. Something wrong about the spec of it, it is either wrong MY for a classic 900 or something, can't remember?
santeria589 12-07-2002, 07:22 AM *eagle eyed anorak award time*
Michael Winner drives a Saab (9-3?) into the rear of another vehicle in a mildly amusing insurance company ad now airing in my region.
I must get out more.
John.

Munki 12-18-2002, 08:59 AM There is a 900 or 9 3 convertable in Dharma and Greg
saabman 12-18-2002, 02:11 PM I found This (http://www.fastenbelts.com/saabcarsonline/Movies&Police/saabinmovies.htm) American site that lists a few
kprm77 12-18-2002, 04:02 PM And you said I was bored Saabman
One film that site missed off was "Fluke" (James Herbert) - there's a 9000 that features a bit in that film...
StephenA 12-18-2002, 04:03 PM C5- now "Escape to Nowhere" - Saab 900 in the opening scene and if I remember it gets blown up later on http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
(Just realised how sad that sounds.... its a cr*p film and here I am watching it again!)
Wen I said "later on" it actually happened after about 5 minutes... it just felt longer the first time obviously http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Well I think its time to turn off the TV and do something less mind rotting
Steve
sensonic 12-22-2002, 04:53 PM Have recently purchased 'The Getaway' on PS2 yes it features many colours of 5 door classic 93's and lots of GM900aeros too, all of which can be driven, http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/fawlty.gif don't think many other video games have saabs in althouth I think 'toca race driver' on PS2 may have 95's in it...

Steve Boyes 01-06-2003, 03:38 PM Yeah, they wheel out the Saab limo every time someone pops their clogs in Eastenders, which lets face it is quite often (apparantly - never watch it myself of course ).

So we may be seeing more of the limo on EastEnders soon.
The quote i often use to the rest of my family is that "there's one in every film" and you would be surprised how many pop up in films and TV - mind you this used to apply equally when i owned Volvo's!!!!! Recent repeat episode of Mid Sommer Murders featured a longish scene with a 9000(dark grey) ramming the back of a 205 or some such although that dozy Sgt Troy kept refering to it as a black 900. Talking of funerals,(Eastenders) i recently saw on the M3 i think, a 9-3 hearse - not sure if it was turbo'd but nice to think that you can always take your last ride in your favourite car!!!
On ftn (freeview channel), programme called Mysterious Ways, a lady doctor drives a silver 9-3 convertible.
Got excited and had to post!
(It's on now)
StanleyB 02-02-2003, 03:15 PM Perhaps a bit off the track, but during the recent gun siege in London, a charcoal grey 9-3 was regularly seen in the TV news shots. No doubt one that belonged to a neigbour close to the place of the siege.

Wolf957 02-13-2003, 04:49 AM The movie Possession, a classic 900 (silver) was driven by Maud (played by Gynneth Paltrow).. she's some kind of historian and apparently it was quite expressly stated in the book of the same name that it HAD to be a Saab.
Also, there's apparently a film out there called Les Rivieres Pourpres that features a Viggen.. a lot. Never managed to get a copy of that movie tho..
bambo 02-15-2003, 10:33 AM Had occasion to see BBC Wales local news at 6.30pm-ish during last week. The feature about even more Gatso's being erected showed a classic 900 driving away from the camera. I just wondered if it belongs to anyone here??
