: Old men drives Saabs
Or at least that is what my fiancee keeps telling me. And I must say...well, no, I won't say I will ask...
Am I the youngest Saab driver on the Forum? Soon to be 29 and on my 3rd Saab, am I a generation or two younger than the rest of you?
blower 03-26-2002, 05:34 PM nope, also a young?? 28.
sgould 03-26-2002, 05:46 PM Old? I'm a post-war baby - 9/45 !!
James 03-26-2002, 10:33 PM Nope, Jez, I think your fiancee needs correcting - in the nicest possible way, of course. I guess there is a perception that SAABs are for older drivers, but the perception is incorrect.
It can be quite fun, though - got some interesting looks / comments when I was 25 and driving a 9000CSE. But then, a lot of them were in the vein of "so, is this your Dad's car?" ...

MartinR 03-27-2002, 02:17 AM Although I'm on my 1st Saab, I've wanted one since I was 21! Does this count? (I'm now 36).
All this "old man" stuff is b******s anyway. What does it mean? The older you get the more money you have and the more you appreciate aspects like comfort and safety. However, it does not mean that you stop appreciating aspects like performance and styling. In saying that, however, there are some types of car that *definitely* say "old man", like Nissan Micras, all Mercs, Jags...oh dear, I's better shut up now!
MR
kprm77 03-27-2002, 05:42 AM Must admit, a lot of times I see 9000's and 9-5's they're driven by older chaps (50's upwards).
I'm getting there, but only 36 at the mo.
I agree with what MartinR said - in that you're not likely to be able to afford one of these sorts of cars until you're older anyway. If I was 21 with £27k to spend, I'd be looking at a £20k TVR, with the rest for insurance!
(Still wouldn't mind a TVR to compliment my Carlsson).

wrighar 03-27-2002, 06:45 AM I started at 19 with a 99 GL Super, and have progressed over the last 14 years through 99's, 99T's, a 900i/S's, several 900T's, a 900 Carlsson, and now have 2 9000's (carlsson and Aero) and 2 c900 T8's (and a ng900SET auto and a 9-3SET auto)

captain aero 03-27-2002, 08:20 AM Everyone's welcome to their personal perceptions, but the SAAB brand, along with BMW, AUDI and MERCEDES, has a fairly neutral "age" image. Rover (with the 75) and Jaguar (with the S type) have a problem in implying an "elderly" brand image through retro looks.

captain aero 03-27-2002, 08:22 AM I must be getting old I'm seeing double.
saabman 03-27-2002, 01:26 PM I bought my wife a 9000 when she was 19 now she's 27 and I've bought her a 9-5,well I say I bought it for her but at weekends I get to play with it.I also get to pay all the bills.
grodan 03-27-2002, 01:30 PM I'm 24. Had a 96 since i was 17, now have a 900s as well. I also got the middle-age remarks when i got the 900. A set of viggen alloys and abott racing spoilers has sorted that one out.
Thanks guys,
I will print this post out and stick it to Jenny's desk for her in the morning! hehe.
quarryeff 03-27-2002, 05:36 PM sgould, I am also 9/45. Must be catching.
Is this how you used to measure age before they brought in the metric system? 9/45? Is it like pounds, shillings and pence?
:0
sgould 03-27-2002, 06:02 PM I think it means I'm twice your age. Don't know about pounds shillings and pence - I was brought up with groats and farthings ;-)
markcanderson 03-28-2002, 12:46 PM Hmm..
I've heard this thread somewhere before...
I'm 29, and car daft... I'm on my second Saab and love them.. always have since a mental drive in my (older) mates 900 16V Turbo S several years ago...
MikeH 04-03-2002, 04:39 AM I am one of the ancients, and proud of it and I love the look of disbelief from the hat-on-backwards brigade when I blow them away in their high speed rice cans.
Mike circa 1938.
PS I have given up the pipe and trilby, the hat kept ending up on the parcel shelf under acceleration
peterlloyd 04-03-2002, 01:03 PM One of the only advantages of passing 50 is getting a quote from SAGA.
I saved over £300 and their policy prevents my kids from getting their hans on my 9-3 Aero
cdcarlsson 04-03-2002, 02:09 PM Had our first Saab 9000i at the age of twenty-three. Used to get the 'that can't be your car' look from many people, not least those that were much older.
Now on a much modded 9000 Aero, after six happy years in a CD Carlsson.
Nick.
fuzzyfelt 04-05-2002, 10:32 AM I'm 22 and I've just bought my first Saab. Its a 1996 900 2.0 SE Turbo and its perfect for the motorway and looks sweet crusing round town.
Thankfully Saab are pretty unique cars and I'm glad they don't have the youngest target audiance. Just imagine how upsetting it would be to see a Saab with a whale spoiler, skirts, fake bonnet air-rams and neon lighting
markcanderson 04-05-2002, 11:29 AM Fuzzyfelt, then you probably don't want to see this then :....

I feel really sorry for this car... to have such a womble for an owner...
siwatkins 04-13-2002, 09:48 PM Hmmm I was 33 when I bought my first Saab, and am 37 now. Does that make me an old man?
1989agoodvintage 04-14-2002, 06:03 AM Yep, I'm in the lower bracket at the age of 29, and I had my first Saab when I was 25.
I saved over £300 and their policy prevents my kids from getting their hans on my 9-3 Aero *[/b]Your a cruel man peter
Fawlty 04-14-2002, 10:39 AM As 'er indoors says, you're only as old as the man you feel. But I wanted a Saab since I was 17 when I used to watch the RAC through Betws-y-Coed (yes, Mark, I'm getting deja vu here, too). Had a Morris pickup, which was known as the Saab Turbo, at age 22. When I finally got my first 9000CSE, my restaurant manager said it was an old man's car - I honestly don't think I'd ever heard that before (then aged 36). Now 44 and definitely an old man. So I think I'll get a Jag...
WindyH 04-14-2002, 04:52 PM I bought my first Saab at 32. Now 38 and driving them ever since. My wife says I've reached pipe and slippers age (maybe she means large bore exhaust and limited slip diff)? I did, very briefly, own an Austin M*xi at the age of 22. A real old farts car if ever there was one!
StanleyB 04-15-2002, 09:52 AM I am kicking at 44, so no young spring chicken here...
But I would like to make the paoint that the reason so many SAAB drivers are of an older age is because:
1. insurance companies keep youngsters away from such dangerous toys.
2. Saab drivers have tried everything, but could get no satisfaction. This takes years of experimentation..
3. We need the space.
ylee coyote 04-15-2002, 09:57 AM sorry to contradict you but...my 20 yr old got insurance in my now deceased 900 turbo 16s..at not much more than his 1.2 nova (with wide wheels lowered and a 3000 watt stereo)
And yes he did wreck it ..
But it gave me a chance to rebuild it and take it to 300 hp
Redleicester 04-17-2002, 07:15 PM Hi there, I'm new to this group, and obviously in the lower age bracket, having just stumbled across my first quarter century! (and boy oh boy did my head hurt!)
Jez - I think it must be the Midlands that does it! I'm on my second Saab, first was a 94 900 Turbo which I bought when I was 21, now I drive a 2000 9-3 Convertible, and my wench has done nothing but moan about them - she likewise deems them geriatric buggies, and when I dared consider a 9-5 over a 9-3, she got even worse.... saying it's something her father would drive.... insults don't get much worse than that! http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
The really maddening thing is that she will freely admit it's a great car, that overtaking is a cinch, that th seats are very comfy (she has a bad back) and so on..... yet she still hates it, and takes any and every opportunity to hul abuse in the poor car's general direction.
Women..... I never will understand them....
Chin up old chap - we like 'em, we drive 'em!
H.
(Though what she doesn't know is that this Saab is going bye bye soon..... guess what I'm buying next... Oh dear.... is that another Scandinavian keyfob I spy in the distance? )
Redleicester 04-17-2002, 07:17 PM Oh, and I forgot to mention, she thinks a better car would be a Rover 75..... because it's a younger car....
I think I need to turn her upside down and shake her, to see if anything is loose!

H.[/b]I'm fortunate in that 'er indoors is rather partial to our Saabs And a couple of Saabs ago when I was hankering over the 156, I got my knuckles firmly rapped
She doesn't quite share my enthusiasm to the same degree though, and when I mentioned I was considering going to the meet on Sunday, she smiled in just the way that woman can to make you feel like a berk. I recalled someone elses comment to her about their other half - this person referred to us enthusiasts as the Saad enthusiasts club, and she takes every opportunity to work it in the conversation with me now http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Anyway, Rover 75!? Is she *much* older than you?

Simon, I'm rolling slowly towards 26, and she's rapidly approaching 30
And no, I don't let her forget it!

Redleicester 04-18-2002, 11:46 AM Who gets to drive the 9000 Aero?
My Father, (his first Saab - and reckons it's the best car since hiss late 80's V12 Jag XJS) and of course, lil old me gets a go once in a while - basically when I need to carry more than two and two halves of people!
H.
Redleicester 04-18-2002, 06:31 PM Peter - damn right you're cruel - the only person that wants to get his hands on my 9-3 Convo is my dad - and a gentlemans agreement states we pay each other to add our selves to the others car insurance....
25 yr old lil me on one daddies 9000 Aero = £270
62 yr old big him on son's ragtop funmobile = £0.000
Sod's bloody law! And they say life ain't fair...
There's some things money just cand buy - and for everything else poor ole Mr Mastercard takes a battering!
