: Bulletin Board Upgrade - Please Read
04-02-2002, 05:14 AM
As you all know (or you do now), these boards are run from the pocket of the
board owner John. We are limited as to what we can do on the boards due to
limitations in the BB software. However, these can be upgraded to give
Here's the catch - this costs about approx. £140. We are all enjoying the
benefits of the boards, and it is not fair for John to bear the full cost of
the upgrade. So, put your money where your mouth is and offer to contribute
towards the cost! ;-)
Here are some of the features we would gain:
enable smiley faces (so that ":)" is converted to a picture.
Member list - Users can browse a list of all registered users with various
Private messages - Send messages to individual users that they will get the
next time they log in.
Edit messages - Users can edit or delete any messages they have posted.
Administrators can edit any message on any board. Moderators can edit any
message on the boards that they moderate.
Fast and powerful search engine
Move posts to relevant boards.
Close (lock) threads.
I'm willing to put in £25 as I get a lot out of these boards. I don't expect
everyone else to put in that much (John could retire if they did!), but
every little will help.
Kevin Mc - £25.

I willing to stick in a tenner if we can make it to the magical £140 mark ;-)
Best of luck

Do TSL have a banner ad?
Try tapping Trouser for some cash.
04-02-2002, 07:38 AM
Great idea _ £20 pledge.
04-02-2002, 07:56 AM
I am pleasantly surprised by the collective generosity, being as we are half way towards the target of £140. Many thanks to those contributors who have made a pledge so far.
04-02-2002, 09:04 AM
£10 from me. Kev do you want it off me on Sunday?
04-02-2002, 09:12 AM
ksowden1 - Could do - I'll do a runner with the cash! ;-)
I will be taking some pictures of the Nissan!
04-02-2002, 09:36 AM
I'm up for a tenner. Can I suggest that John puts a catalogue item to that value (or whatever value) on the Elkparts site, and thus those that want to contribute more can buy one, two, or more of them.
04-02-2002, 10:28 AM
Yep put me down for a tenner too, will hopefully be able to bring it to the SEC AGM
04-02-2002, 10:40 AM
That's £100 so far!
Only £40 to go.... Not bad for half a day!
SaabAid 2002 - Bob Geldof is getting jealous!
Put me down for a tenner please.
04-02-2002, 12:11 PM
By the way ksowden1 is my missus's email name not mine, it's Simon to everyone except the missus, she just calls me BAS*ARD!
04-02-2002, 12:14 PM
I'll put in £20, I can bring it to the meet next weekend or the SEC AGM. Whatever's easiest.
04-02-2002, 01:42 PM
Quick add up, tenner to go ?. Count my in for that, where and when to send etc please >>>
04-02-2002, 01:45 PM
Dont stop pledges now weve got £140 on paper, I want an Xmas do as well.... :-)))
04-02-2002, 01:52 PM
I'll go a tenner. I'll hand it over at Tamworth on Sunday - I'll be there by the way!
04-02-2002, 02:27 PM
I'am in for a tenner, don't be afraid to remind me on Sunday Kevin.
04-02-2002, 02:37 PM
Many thanks to Kprm77 (Kevin), renfield, ian_sadler, jnevillea, ksowden1, gassy, jb, 1989agoodvintage, Andy Bowles, Windy H and Adrian.
I am bowled over by all your generosity. I make that a total of £150.00. Since there is a slight surplus I suggest that I look into new hosting that will enable no problems with bandwidth and may even allow people to upload photos aswell. I shall make up the remainder for the purposes of hosting.
I have it that Kprm77, ksowden1, 1989agoodvintage and WindyH will give their contributions to Kevin. I will contact all concerned by email with my realworld details.
Again, I'd like to that you all for your kind pledges of support - this will really help the development of the BB.
Thanks to MikeH aswell who posted whilst I was typing a reply.
04-02-2002, 03:51 PM
An amazing response! Couldn't have hoped for a better response from everyone :-)
04-02-2002, 04:44 PM
Happy to try and get £20 to you . Think you do a great job and really enjoy the site. Will try to be at Tamworth on Sunday . Is this the best way to contribute? A cheque is a possibility too ?
04-02-2002, 04:44 PM
I have sent all concerned an email with more information. I have used the email address that you registered with. If your email address has changed or you have not received the email then please contact me by clicking on "contact us" at the bottom of the page.
To reiterate Kevin, many thanks to all.
04-02-2002, 06:04 PM
Strewth!! That was quick. Only been gone since lunch.
If your researches of the BB world show that the odd "optional extra" would be nice at a few quid more, post a comment and I expect I can add a bit.
04-02-2002, 06:37 PM
I've been beaten to it as well I would pledge a tenner if you need it John.
04-03-2002, 04:12 AM
Count me in for a tennet if it's not too late. If we get more cash can we upgrade even more? Otherwise, I think a good idea for the surplus is to do like the saab owners club do and generate a list of willing helpers who can assist if ever we get stuck while out on our travels.I'd happily put my name up for that.
Kevin, let me know how I gat gat you the cash on email@example.com
04-03-2002, 04:20 AM
Admin/John will email you with the details.
I am still amazed by the reponse - Shows what thoroughly decent chaps we all are! ;-)
04-03-2002, 04:36 AM
Many thanks for the additional commitments. Thanks to Kevin for his enthusiasm and the idea and thanks to all contributors who have made a pldege.
The situation now is that we have raised and exceeded the amount required to cover the cost of the licence for the upgraded BB. This will add a lot more functionality for you - including the all important search function. It will enable us to focus more on what you, as contributors, want to see from the board.
With the additional pledges recently made, I am looking at separate hosting specifically for this bulletin board where we will have more hosting space and more bandwidth available. Hopefully this means you lot can get your car photos uploaded, too.
Further down the line, I would like to introduce more features. I have a killer idea that I have already been working on - I want to tell you all about it - but it is a few months from fruition. I know that you will like it, though - since there is nothing else like it currently available ;-)
Again, many thanks to all of you for your fantastic support. I'm already committed to buy one contributor a beer when he comes to the south coast. If any of you are at the EMS Spares day then it looks like I'll be opening my wallet in the evening at a nearby pub ;-)
04-03-2002, 08:19 AM
Kevin...what an excellent idea from Anthony B ! I am unemployed at the mo so can't help with cash but would always be willing to be on an emergency help list. Think its worth trying to draw one up?
04-03-2002, 08:33 AM
Worth doing though don't know if/how this could be incorporated into the upgraded BB.
John will have a better idea.
04-03-2002, 11:09 AM
If you want to re-host this service give me a shout..
I'd be willing to freely donate a server including all the space you need (well up to 40GBytes anyway) and a permanent 256kb/sec connection to the internet for the cause..
mail me at : firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to discuss.
04-03-2002, 03:55 PM
Again, many thanks to all who have pledged their support in one way or another.
I have sent an email to you all (based on the email address that you subscribed with) with further information. If you have not received this email address, please contact me (click on contact link at bottom of this page).
I already have some ideas and I know that many of you do, too - so I am keen to get this board upgraded asap. This weekend might not be possible, but I shall try to upgrade it within the next couple of weekends.
Cheers, and thanks!
04-03-2002, 04:05 PM
I've just come back after easter and read this, Great idea, I'll chip in a tenner too.
04-03-2002, 04:23 PM
Sorry, looks like my hotmail filter deleted the message you sent me. Could you resend it to the new address in my profile.
04-03-2002, 04:53 PM
Count me in if I'm not too late.
04-03-2002, 05:12 PM
Bloody hell, I go away for a couple of days and look what happens! Looks like it's too late to throw my cash at you, John, but it's the thought that counts ...
04-03-2002, 06:08 PM
Got your mail.
Funds on their way.
04-03-2002, 06:15 PM
04-04-2002, 02:44 PM
04-05-2002, 02:14 AM
Sorry, I've been a bit late catching up. I pledge a tenner - please let me know where to send it.
Another suggestion: another board I contribute to raises funds to keep it running by people who sell items donating, say, 5% of the final selling price. Purely optional but it seems to work. OK, 5% of the selling price of a car may be a bit high, but any donations can help.
04-05-2002, 04:36 AM
As I sort of said above, banner adds from suppliers are a reasonable way of raising funds.
ps a spol chek is a great feature to have on a bbs cos i stops me looking stupid (most of the time)
04-05-2002, 04:46 AM
Count me in for a tenner to if not to late
04-05-2002, 05:23 AM
Thanks to MartinR and Matt Atkinson for their support also (I have sent you each an email with further details - if you have not received it let me know and update your PROFILE (top right of page) to ensure your email address is current).
Matt - would you like to click on "contact us" at the bottom of the page and let me have your current email address? Cheers.
Thanks to others for their suggestions, also. As I have said previously, the success of the BB depends on it's contributors. I am just happy to provide a place where you and I can exchange ideas and information. ...and it is set to get better very soon thanks to you! ;-)
Ian Sadler raises an interesting point about banner ads. I have consciously chosen not to go down this route in the past as I quite like the idea of a site that is able to make impartial recommendations.
Interestingly, I have been approached by some big names in the Saab Scene (one very big name in particular) about advertising on the site. We have also had WE Bishop of Bristol being very cheeky trying to promote themselves on this site whislt pretending to ask some really dumb questions.
MartinR's suggestion of a voluntary contribution on sales is an interesting one. Your voluntary contributions have already proved enormously helpful and are much appreciated.
Once the new and improved version of this board is up and running we will have more flexibility, more forums and I will be looking forward to all the great ideas and suggestions that you guys have to improve them still further.
04-05-2002, 10:30 AM
Just because a company feels its worthwhile to pay to advertise on your BBS it doesn't mean that they can bully any body into buying their products.
Other BBS's I've used usually do quite well with the help from adds.
But people like Trent Saab Ltd TSL (who I know only through their Subaru activities) can be a positive help with contribution on a more tech. nature - once the banner add is in place of course.
Just my opinion.
04-06-2002, 10:00 AM
Thanks to Ian Sadler, jnevillea, gassy and Andy Bowles whose contributions have already been received. Thanks to sgould and jez for your emails re: electronic transfer. Matt, I have sent an email to the new addresses you have given.
Good luck to all at Tamworth meet, tomorrow. Kevin will only be too happy to lighten your wallets ;-)
Thanks everyone for your continued support.
04-06-2002, 04:30 PM
I still haven't recieved an e-mail, can you let me know where to send the cheque to and it will be in the post.
04-07-2002, 06:05 AM
9000CS23T (Neil), please click on CONTACT US at the bottom of the page and I will respond to your email with all the details.
04-07-2002, 04:01 PM
Do I detect a upgrade in progress??
04-07-2002, 04:22 PM
woooooooooohhhhhhh, this is differant
04-07-2002, 06:53 PM
I dunno if it helps any as you have already got over the £140 mark, but i'll chuck in a tenner aswell, let me know where to send the cheque.
04-07-2002, 07:05 PM
Ooh, bit posh in here innit?
Wonder if these'll work:
:-) :-( ;-)
04-07-2002, 07:06 PM
Aha - now I get it!
Oh what fun
04-07-2002, 07:34 PM
just got back from Pub, few beers, and all little icons to play with on upgrade site. Im going to bed, bit too much, will check 2morrowon how all went at Tamworth meet.
Chers, Andy Bowles
04-08-2002, 03:34 AM
Great work, John!
04-08-2002, 04:34 AM
I've not even sent the money through from Tamworth yet!
I think there's about £100 to send down to John from the Tamworth meet - that'll be winding it's way down to John today....
I'll get the pics posted later, well done everyone (seeing the benefits already!)
Top stuff... All this in a matter of days as well - don't you sleep??!!
04-08-2002, 09:19 AM
WOW that didn't take long
04-08-2002, 12:10 PM
Yes, I like this. Worth every penny .
Would like the option of posting pictures, but, am I right in thinking they have to be somewhere else on the web first, with a full URL? If so I will have a problem as I don't have a web page.
A direct "paste in" to a gallery or similar would be nice, if space is available.
04-08-2002, 12:21 PM
Another thought. When the topic goes to several pages, like this one, can the default load the last (latest) page first?
04-08-2002, 12:26 PM
sgould - to get some pics on the board, use the image function to point to a JPG elsewhere.
You can post pictures at the following places for free (I used Communtiy Webshots for the Tamworth meet pics):
Community Webshots (http://community.webshots.com)
There will be others, though these are all I know of at the moment.
04-08-2002, 12:32 PM
If not too late I'll send a tenner John,If this is just a scam to buy a 9-5 for yourself I reckon by the end of the week you will have enough, only joking keep up the good work, brilliant new site still with no banners or pop up's.
04-08-2002, 01:56 PM
excellent work as always with the site, afraid I couldnt offer any funds as I just started a new job and taxed my 99, as soon as I have some loot spare and you have need - it's yours. Just not all of it...
04-08-2002, 06:16 PM
Just to add my two rands' worth ...
Nice One, John!!!! http://www.saabscene.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
