Nearing completion of a journey last night in appaling weather conditions rain, floods etc, I stopped briefly to refuel. On resuming, I found the steering had become 'heavyish' & noticed some strange sounds coming from the steering column. Checked p/s belt & found all to be well. Today the steering is still a little stiff & creaky. I'm fairly sure the problem is water related but what do you think guys ?

Sounds like it could be the rack itself ?

Simon.

It may seem obvious, but is the PAS low on fluid ?

'Strange But True'

Thanks for your thoughts.
On further investigation & on removal of the steering wheel, I found that the 'creaking' appeared to be coming from a roller bearing at the top of the steering column. On applying some light oil the problem was solved.
How I wish all problems could be solved so easily !!!
Has anyone else suffered a similar problem ?

Yes, my '93 convertible has the same problem, but not always.
Where exactly did you put the oil?

Thanks, Maarten

Hi Maarten,

I'm not sure if the 93 is a similar layout to my 1990 900 but.......
1.Remove steering wheel
2.Remove indicator/wiper arm unit (two screws on the underside)
3.The bearing is now visible-apply oil.
Hope this does the trick, let me know how you get on
