: Confused Folding Door Mirror?

Hi Guys!

Basically, about a two weeks ago, my passenger side door mirror stopped powerfolding. Given the area where I live I thought that the mirror had been pushed back and was now broken. But it appears to have come to life again, although not in the way I hoped.

Lately, because the powerfold doesn't work on the passenger side, I have been pushing it in and pulling it out by hand. I have still been operating the driver's side with the button. However, when I arrived home last night, on the push of the button, BOTH mirrors folded! In my delight, I thought the car had fixed itself!

This morning though, on the push of the button, it did not open. So, as I have been doing for the last two weeks I pulled it open, however it didn't seem to click into the open position it normally does, and it was much stiffer.

I had to stop on my journey this morning, switched the car off, didn't do anything with the mirrors. However, when I got back in the car started and pulled away, the already open passenger mirror decided to open itself further until it was completely backwards!

I have disconnected both Driver and Passenger door harnesses, but to no avail. I now have a mirror that seems to powerfold when its in the mood.

Is there anyway to reset the mirror or something?

What car is this on?

My 9-5 passenger door mirror sometimes doesn't unfold. I find that if I turn the ignition off again and then on, it will complete the operation.

Before I realised that redoing the ignition sorted it, I had been pushing it to and fro and it didn't like it.

If the mirror has been folded or unfolded by hand, Saab say that it can take up to 8 goes to get the auto clutch to "catch" again. I haven't taken it apart to see if there's an internal problem, but I suspect the clutch in the hinge is slipping and the mirror thinks it's reached its limit and turns the power off. I'm thinking this because I thought the hinge was sticking, which it may still be, and the clutch was slipping because of it. But my attempts to spray lube around it must have got to the clutch part as the problem got worse. ut it may just be a weak clutch.

When I say "clutch" I haven't taken anything apart and the mechanism may be totally different, but there is something in there like that, that stops the motor when it reaches the limit.

It's a 2005 9-3 Vector Sport Airflow.

Hmm, the 8 goes thing sort of ties in with it suddenly working again. I'll see if it opens on its own now if I switch off and back on again.

Cheers,

Ben.

The travel of the motors is limited by end-stops - it basically stops folding or unfolding when it detects the increased current draw caused by the motor hitting the end-stop. As stated above, I think this will sort itself out over time; mine did this some time ago (though at various times mine both tried to fold itself flat after I opened it manually, and tried to come through the passenger window after I folded it manually), but has been fine for a while without any intervention. I seem to recall that mine started playing up after being knocked in a car park.

My passenger one on the 9-3 goes down (the mirror itself not the whoel unit) it should close inwards but it dont... The right ones doesnt move at all, and there is no "whirring" motor sound :(
