update, i have got home and had a look and the chrome handle pulls ok but does not open the door. it is very easy to pull the handle with no resistance. i take it something has gone bang with the mechanism inside the door. can anybody give me any pointers ?
thanks

The handles have a hook on the end which just loops round the steel rod which operates the door mechanism. If you remove the round plastic cover in the middle of the backplate you can get access to the torx bolt that holds the handle on. Once removed the handle will just pull off. Sounds like the hook has slipped off the steel rod in which case shouldn't be a problem to relocate it. Also possible but less likely is that the hook has snapped off, meaning you'll need a new handle, usually a few chrome ones for sale on e-bay. Hope this helps
