I mentioned this a few days ago and at the time I suggested we make up a few ads of our own. That may still happen.
In the meantime, though, I received an email from a student at George Washington University seeking our assistance in some development work they’re doing for ads aimed at the Boston market, one of Saab’s traditional playgrounds.
I could sit here in my grumpy medicated state and make snide remarks about it all, or I can encourage us all to collectively roll our sleeves up, put our thinking caps on and try to be part of the solution. I favour the second option, how about you?
Saab have traditionally had some great advertising and I’d love for these students to come up with something that’s relevant, true to Saab’s core and importantly, something that will be effective.
About the project….
- It seems this is a college thing, but the results will be presented to the brass at SaabUSA and I assume they stand a chance of being implemented.
- Born from Jets must remain as a slogan, but from what I can tell the ad teams working on this have a wide scope to build on that and flesh it out.
- As mentioned, the campaign to be developed is geographically targeted at the market in Boston.
- The ad campaign is particularly focused on the Saab 9-3. Given that it would possibly be implemented in several months time, I’d assume that XWD is part of the scope.
- The campaign can look at various mediums for delivery such as print, film, internet, etc.

I’d love for as many people as possible to participate in this. The students at GWU are planning on consulting with you - the Saab enthusiasts - to get your ideas and thoughts on the brand in order to contribute to the whole project. They’ll also be looking to bounce ideas off you once they’re formed. I think it’d be a great thing for a Saab community like the one we’ve got here at TS to support something like that - we don’t get asked to do so very often.
So…..
The first thing you need to do is complete this quick survey (http://GWproject.saab.sgizmo.com) but only do that if you’re a US resident and assume eastern time zones. I’ll check back and see if they’re planning on sticking to those dates as they seem a little odd to me (Easter). Saabers outside the US, you’ll gt to contribute ideas too, so please have a think about it all.
The GWU people will be looking to do some workshops and chat sessions in the next few weeks and I’m sure they’d love some US-based Saabers, particularly those in the New England area, to be involved.
In the next day or so I’ll open up a post here on the site where you can contribute your thoughts on Saab advertising, the brand ethos, the 9-3 etc. You can see the parameters the students are working with, listed above, so please formulate your thoughts within those parameters. Just coming in and saying BFJ sucks, we’re sick of it won’t help (regardless of how much I might agree with you).
Get your creative juices flowing and let’s get Saab flying!
